Evolution of African-American Dance and Music featuring Chester Whitmore, “Lord of the Swing”

This concert is part of a series of nationwide events to celebrate the opening on September 24 of the Smithsonian Institution’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture.

In an evening dedicated to the legendary swing-band era, the multitalented bandleader, dancer, and choreographer Chester Whitmore will take the audience on a historic and entertaining journey to explore African American dance and music, which dominated American popular culture throughout the thirties, forties, and fifties. Directed and choreographed by Whitmore himself, the show will include a big band, guest singers, tap and swing dancers, and a multimedia presentation. The performance will surely have the audience jumping and jiving all night long.
